The Power List 2020 – R&D Trailblazers

Jeffrey Chen

Executive Director, Cannabis Research Initiative, University of California Los Angeles, USA

Motivation: My mission is to generate the data needed so every person can achieve their desired effect and minimize any undesired effects, the first time and every time they choose to consume cannabis and cannabinoids.

Unanswered question: The entourage effect – is it always the case that whole plant extracts are more efficacious or have fewer side effects than individual components? What if there are minor constituents of the cannabis plant that have deleterious effects or drug interactions? If indeed whole plant extracts are more effective, how many constituents are needed to generate the entourage effect – 2, 25, or 140?

Most exciting project: Understanding how the pain-relieving effects of cannabis differ between men and women.
